What exactly is makhana?

Makhana is the popped seed of Euryale ferox, a prickly water lily that grows in still ponds and wetlands.

The plant flowers on the water's surface, and its seeds sink to the muddy pond bed. Farmers gather these seeds by hand, often diving into the water to collect them. The hard black seeds are then washed, sun-dried, graded by size and roasted on hot iron pans. At just the right moment, they are struck so the shell cracks and the white kernel puffs up into the light, crunchy makhana we know.

It's slow, skilled work that has been passed down in farming families for generations. Every pack of Swasth Snacks comes from our GST certified direct production, so you know exactly where your snack is made.

For centuries, makhana has been a part of Indian homes: offered in pujas, eaten during vrat, added to kheer at festivals and roasted with ghee as a winter snack. Today it has found a new place as one of India's favourite healthy snacks.

Why makhana is a smarter snack

A handful of makhana does a lot more for you than a handful of fried namkeen.

Plant protein

Makhana carries a useful amount of plant protein, which helps a snack feel more satisfying.

Good source of fibre

Dietary fibre supports digestion and helps you stay full between meals.

Naturally low in fat

The seed itself has almost no fat. We roast it instead of frying it to keep it that way.

Contains minerals

Makhana naturally contains minerals like magnesium, potassium and phosphorus.

Gluten-free

A grain-free snack, suitable for people who avoid gluten. Always check the pack for seasoning ingredients.

Light on the stomach

Airy and easy to digest, which is why it has long been a favourite during fasting.

Popping is a craftRoasted seeds are struck by hand at the right moment. Timing decides how big and white the pop turns out.

It soaks up flavourMakhana's mild, porous texture holds seasoning well, which is why it takes on so many flavours.

Keep every handful crunchy

Makhana loves dry air and hates humidity. A few simple habits keep it crisp till the last piece.

  • Press the zip lock shut after every use.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Avoid keeping the pack near the stove or in the fridge.
  • If it softens in monsoon, dry-roast on low flame for 2–3 minutes.
  • Once opened, finish within a week for the best taste.

Questions people ask

Anything else? Message us on WhatsApp and we'll be happy to help.

What is makhana made from?

Makhana is the popped seed of the prickly water lily (Euryale ferox). The seeds are harvested from ponds, dried, roasted and popped into light white puffs.

Is Swasth Snacks makhana fried?

No. We roast it. A small amount of oil is used only so the seasoning sticks; exact details are printed on each pack.

Is makhana the same as lotus seed?

Not quite. It's commonly called lotus seed, but makhana comes from the prickly water lily, a different plant from the lotus.

How much makhana can I eat in a day?

A small bowl, roughly a handful or two, makes a good snack portion for most adults. It's light, so it's easy to overeat; a portion from a bowl works better than eating from the pack.

Can I eat makhana during vrat?

Plain makhana is a traditional fasting food. Our Himalayan salt flavour uses sendha namak, but please check the ingredient list on the pack against your own fasting rules.

Is it suitable for kids?

Yes, makhana is a popular children's snack. For young children, choose the mild flavours and supervise, as with any crunchy food.

How long does a pack stay fresh?

Unopened packs are best before the date printed on the pouch. Once opened, zip it shut and finish within a week so it stays crisp.
